The Gifts We Keep Coming Back To

The Gifts We Keep Coming Back To

Coffee with Celeste ☕️
The Guide to Mastering the Care Package for Every Season of Life

Coffee’s brewing… can I tell you something? ☕️

I think most of us eventually find our gift.

You know the one.

The gift you send when someone has a baby. The thing you bring when a friend is going through a hard season. The thing you reach for when there’s a birthday on the calendar, a new house to celebrate, or someone you love just needs a little reminding that they matter.

At some point, it becomes your staple gift.

You stop searching.

You stop scrolling through a hundred ideas wondering what on earth to send.

You just know.

And lately, I’ve been thinking about what makes a gift become that gift.

I don’t think it’s really about the gift.

The gifts we come back to usually aren’t the biggest.

They aren’t necessarily the most expensive.

And they definitely aren’t always the most elaborate.

They’re the ones that somehow say what we were trying to say.

I thought about you.

I know this moment matters.

I wanted to show up.

There’s something incredibly comforting about having a gift you trust to do that.

Because the truth is, loving people well sounds simple.

But sometimes knowing how to do it isn’t.

There are moments when words are hard.

What do you send the friend who just had a baby and is completely overwhelmed?

What do you bring someone who is grieving when you know nothing is going to make it better?

What do you give the person starting over?

Or the friend who got the promotion?

The mom sending her child off to college?

The woman who has spent the last six months holding everything together and probably needs someone to notice?

Sometimes we know exactly how we feel about someone.

We just don’t know how to put it into a box.

And maybe that’s what makes a staple gift so special.

It becomes a little bit of shorthand for love.

“This made me think of you.”

Those might be some of my favorite words in the world.

Because tucked inside them is something bigger:

I notice you.

I know you.

You crossed my mind when you weren’t standing in front of me.

And I think that’s what people remember.

Not necessarily what was inside the package.

They remember opening the door and seeing something waiting for them.

They remember reading the card.

They remember the friend who checked in.

They remember feeling known.

Maybe we don’t need more gifts.

Maybe we need better ways to show up.

Things that make celebrating someone easier.

Things that make comforting someone feel a little less impossible.

Things that help us turn “I should send her something” into “I already know exactly what I’m sending.”

Because life is going to keep giving us reasons to love people.

Babies will be born.

Birthdays will come.

Kids will leave for college.

Friends will move into new homes.

People will get sick.

Hearts will break.

Fresh starts will happen.

And ordinary Tuesdays will roll around when someone simply needs to hear:

I’m thinking about you.

So maybe finding your staple gift isn’t really about becoming a better gift giver.

Maybe it’s about removing one tiny barrier between wanting to show up for someone and actually doing it.

And the easier we make that?

The more often we might do it.

So here’s my little challenge this week.

Find your thing.

Maybe it’s flowers from the little shop down the street.

Maybe it’s the banana bread you always bake.

Maybe it’s a handwritten card.

Maybe it’s a care package you know they’ll actually use.

Maybe it’s showing up on the porch with coffee.

Whatever it is, find something that feels like you and keep coming back to it.

Let it become the thing your people recognize.

Of course she sent this.

Because I’m becoming more and more convinced that the people who love others well aren’t necessarily the people who always know the perfect thing to do.

They’re often just the people who have decided:

When I think about showing up, I’m going to show up.

And maybe the best gifts are simply the ones that help us do that a little more often.

Until next Tuesday,

Celeste ☕️
