Before You Buy the Flowers

Before you buy the flowers, can I ask you one question?
What will they have left in a week?
Please don’t misunderstand me—I love flowers.
They brighten a room. They make people smile. They tell someone, “I’m thinking about you.” There is absolutely a place for them.
But over the years, I’ve started asking a different question whenever someone I love is walking through a difficult season.
What will they still have when everyone else has moved on?
When a new mom brings her baby home, everyone rushes to celebrate the baby.
A week later, the visitors slow down.
The meals stop coming.
The excitement settles.
And that’s often when she needs encouragement the most.
The same is true for someone recovering from surgery.
Or grieving a loss.
Or moving into a new home.
Or starting over after life didn’t go the way they expected.
The hardest days are rarely the first ones.
They’re usually the quiet ones that follow.
That’s why I love giving gifts that stay.
Something soft to wrap up in.
Words they can read again.
A small reminder that someone is still thinking about them long after everyone else has returned to normal life.
Because while flowers eventually fade…
Feeling remembered doesn’t.
Sometimes the most meaningful gift isn’t the biggest one.
It isn’t the most expensive one.
It isn’t even the prettiest one.
It’s the one that quietly says,
“I’m still here.”

Ask yourself…
What will they still have next Tuesday?
That one question has changed the way I give gifts.
And honestly…
I think it’s changed the way I love people.
